I'm assuming from the description that this took place during the time that there was no "press" signal in the bench. Which would make the pause a judgment call that a jury should not reverse. However, it is hard for you to be certain that the jury didn't ask questions of the referees, or warn them about "quick" pauses. I would think that questions and warnings would be done discreetly, since they are not for public consumption.
