Deep Dish:

I am going to make some comments regarding your post. Normally, I try and reframe from commentary; however, today I have some time do so.

1. The meet you're referring was the 2003 USAPL Men's Open Nationals, which took place nearly five [5] years ago in South Dakota. Sometime shortly after that meet, I began handling the technical duties for the federation.

2. Since then, things have changed quite a bit in terms of training and bringing aboard new referees. As an organization, we are much better, technically, than we were in 2003.

3. With regards to having/not having a jury, you can't single out JUST one [1] meet, and one [1] attempt that took place nearly five years ago, and use it as an example to say that having a jury at a championship as being pointless.

4. As a VERY active Jury Member at the VAST majority of our National Championships [yes, in the past 4.5 years I have been to 51 National/International Championships], Bill Clayton, Jack Marcus and I have been quite active as Jury Members, and as Technical Secretaries. If we see something that was CONVINCINGLY missed by an official, we, in fact, act on it.

5. Finally, please refer to my Technical Article in Powerlines issue #31. In this article, I address two key points. Those points being:

a. Maintaining Standards of Officiating
b. Jury Responsibilities

I hope this will provide some comfort for you. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to comment. I look forward to seeing you in October in Palm Springs and enjoy your rest.

Robert Keller
