"Deep Dish:

I am going to make some comments regarding your post. Normally, I try and reframe from commentary; however, today I have some time do so."

Rob,
Comments are always welcome. Don't refrain, entertain and and enlighten.

"1. The meet you're referring was the 2003 USAPL Men's Open Nationals, which took place nearly five [5] years ago in South Dakota. Sometime shortly after that meet, I began handling the technical duties for the federation."

I think that was the meet with the Bounce and Go but if you re-read my other post, I did say that I was including other meets as well - both in USAPL and in other orgs I've lifted in. My opinion on the value of having a jury is based on what I've seen over the years. I just haven't seen enough value in it to think it is worthwhile.

At large meets, especially if we were to be on TV someday, it might look impressive to have a table of serious looking people in blazers overseeing the whole thing and I suppose at national meets where refs only ref etc, it's a conveniance.

I suppose I'm thinking more in terms of local/state meets. I don't think we've ever had a jury and really haven't missed it.

We've never had a problem that couldn't be handled by the refs/meet director/state chair etc. At that level, it's much more important to just have "enough" refs and table help etc.

I guess its kind of like the blazers vs polo shirt things. At Nationals, blazers are probably a good idea. Refs will only be reffing and they do look more "official."

At the local level, refs might be reffing, spotting, coaching, working the score table, pulling on shirts etc depending on the flight. Hell, Randazzo is dedicated enough to ref one flight and lift in a different flight and change back into the blazer, tie and slacks between lifting and reffing. He's nuts...and by nuts I mean old school LOL

It's pretty much a "whatever needs to be done" thing and the ref shirts are much more practical.

"3. With regards to having/not having a jury, you can't single out JUST one [1] meet, and one [1] attempt that took place nearly five years ago, and use it as an example to say that having a jury at a championship as being pointless."

Again, I must remind that I was not singling that meet out as the only time I've felt the jury was useless, just a great example.

Also, I made the point that the jury doesn't really serve any function that couldn't be performed by a head ref/state chair/meet director, guy with a rule book in hand. Most non-national meets don't have a jury and problems get solved

"I hope this will provide some comfort for you. "

Rob, It's comforting just knowing that you're thinking of me. LOL

"Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to comment."

Any time. I realize the jury isn't going to go anywhere and some people aren't going to agree with me. Just voicing my opinion.

" I look forward to seeing you in October in Palm Springs and enjoy your rest."

Back at ya. Lance will be working us both like dogs.... at least we'll be inside with the A/C on.
