Will:

On a serious note, Jack and I are going to discuss and address this matter in Killeen. Afterwards, I am going to review this matter further with Bill Clayton, the USAPL Chairman of the Referee Committee, while we are in Aruba.

Now, to briefly address your point[s] -- Let is be known, we ALWAYS welcome the assistance of ALL our National Referees at ALL our National Championships.

However, over the past five years or so there have been officials that have come to our National Championships completely unprepared in terms of their knowledge and application of the technical rules -- Sometimes not even having a uniform. More importantly, some officials were not "fluent" with the current technical rules, and also were not welcoming corrective feedback to elevate/maintain their standard of officiating.

Undergoing this review process, I found this situation to be appalling. The lifters in our Federation deserve better and to have the best referees in the chair at ALL times.

Additionally, National Championships, especially those meets that are USA World Team Qualifiers are NOT the competitions we want our “seated” referees learning the rules, especially with records and team slots on the line. When this occurs, a lifter who has travelled thousands of miles, and spent thousands of dollars is penalized because the “seated” official has not maintained their knowledge an application of the current technical rules. I have seen this more times than I care to discuss. There has to be some form of accountability.

With that being said, this coming year and next, we are going to be reviewing the pool of National Referees.

Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts.

Best,

Robert Keller
