Tommy,
In many other countries, there is only one fed - the IPF affiliate.

This gives them an advantage over us in a couple of ways.

1) Everyone is doing the same thing. There is no debate in Russia over whether lifter A, who totals 2200 in Federation X is as good as LIfter B who totals 2200 in Federation Y. It's apples to apples.

If everyone in the US used the same gear and was judged to the same standard we'd have a similar situation. Everyone says that certain big name lifters are strong but squat high - if everyone lifted to the same standard that wouldn't be an issue.

How many times have we seen the Garry Frank/ Brian Siders discussion. If we look at it another way, Siders and Frank on the same team. No disrespect to Gillingham intended at all - in fact imagine the battle at Nationals just to make the World team with those three and a few others.

Or at 275 - Goggins. What if IPF depth knocked a lot off Goggins squats. Even if he hit a mere 975, with his pull he'd probably medal and have a good shot at winning. Again, Goggins, Cardella and maybe even Captain Kirk at 275 at Nationals - fun to watch.

Anyway, you get the point. We are watered down and they are not.

2)It makes for a deeper pool of lifters. A few times PLUSA has published the results of the Russian Nationals. Top 10 guys at 220 are all around 2000. That is depth - I think that also keeps the lifters motivated.

3) Russia doesnt have the NFL

4) In some countries strength athletes are revered. In others, there is government support which allows athletes to train without as many other worries. Not all but some.
