In Response To: Bench Press - Spotters (Garry Holmen)

IMO, two ATTENTIVE spotters is enough, if the following assumptions are met:

- The lifter stays with the bar to help get it back to the rack.
- When the weights are getting very high, stronger spotters are used.
- Fingers kept locked under the bar; spotters "follow" the weight both down and up, never allowing more than ~4" between the bar and their hands.

At the IPF Worlds in 2004, I was spotting for some of the lighter classes, and two of us "caught" about 235 kg. a couple times, and we were not the biggest or strongest of spotters (I weigh ~185).

IMO, having guys rush in from the sides several seconds after the lift has been missed is not productive. I've seen instances where the guys rushing in actually caused the weight to get unbalanced, when the two guys on the ends had it under control already.

My 2c.
