Yeah I agree with that Jason. It's also more reassuring to have a couple of big guys who are also lifters doing the spotting. But them being lifters is more important than them being large. i.e. I'd rather have to 200lb lifters spotting me than two 300lb knuckleheads who have never seen a bench shirt before!

Of course, once you're getting in to 700lb territory then the spotters need to be quite big too.

Does anybody else think there's a case for either benching in a power rack or at least having some kind of spotter pins set just below chest height (but bove face height) so that in the even of a catastrophic failure the lifter doesn't end up in hospital? The lift would still be executed in exactly the same way and the spotters would do exactly the same job, but if they missed then the lifter would be less likely to end up in the emergency room.
