First great reply by Jason.

In our gym their are lifters who compete in many feds, however the only one that gets bashed regularly is the USAPL. One of the main reasons is the banning of the monolift. Many feel that this is the greatest safety tool for powerlifters that has come down the road. Actually I have to agree. I still step out with the bar, but I like the no interference with the forearms you have versus the ER and Serpa racks. Hey we had one guy who used to fall forward a lot in the squat until he started using a monolift. Now he sets up better and suffers less injuries.
However even the staunches anti USAPL lifters do admit the judging is more consistent, and no gimmees are there.
Another thing is that to be a high level competitor in USAPL you do not need to spend a fortune on equipment. Hey I know one lifter who lifts APF who has to cart over $2000 in gear to a meet.
The USAPL does have problems, but who doesn't. For the friendships there, high level of competition, and costs it really cannot be beat.
Now if you are one who is just "in it for the fun," kind of like just working out to tone up. Then there are plenty of other opportunities to compete. Many allow everything and anything and yet there is not the friendly competition that we enjoy. I mean it and I look forward to eating some peppers with Jason at 2006 National Masters. Are you man enough for it big guy?
Old guy diet secret for breakfast. Scrambled egg whites with onions, hot sausage, peppers, and topped with habanero cheese. This with a bowl of oatmeal squares and you have propulsion to squat big. :-P
