You don't have to see the "top surface of the legs at the hip joint" to know where it is.

When you are judging from the front you can see it, but when the lifter starts to go down, it disappears in "the crease", but you do know where it is.

I've judged over 400 meets and I feel I can call depth from the front.

As you said, if the lift is close, the benefit of the doubt should go to the lifter and give him or her a white light.

If you think it's high, flick the red.
