In Response To: Re: The squat debate ,Head ref judging depth (Roger Hendrix)

It is my opinion, that what Roger has described, is what needs to happen at all meets at this time. While as a referee, I really don't want to have others looking over my back and getting into a debate about each call I make. But, it is due to the critism of late that more oversight is needed. Look at it as OJT. I don't think it will be accomplished with customer service suvey forms (and I strongly encourage quality service to the lifters). If most of the lifters were thoroughly familiar with the rule book, some of the issues that has come to the forefront recently would be resolved according to rules and policies of the federation. Lifters are more focused on lifting and only have concerns when it affects them. While the feedback may give NGB members an idea how well or poorly meets are conducted and officiated, it is more proactive for senior level referees who should be responsible for ensuring that calls are accurate and consistent. I agree that it is more difficult for the head referee to judge depth. Unless it is obivious. Lifters like Kirk Karwoski leave no doubt about their depth. But others who just break parellell and have large quads are more difficult to call. The head ref should be more focused on the technical (commands, equipment and ensuring things go well with platform staff)aspects. And when there is that gray area, give the call to the lifter.
