Rif,
I agree 100% that the referees job is to judge the lifts and not to be your friend. Either the lift is good or it was bad and the refs job is to JUDGE it accordingly BUT there is a good way to handle it.

Red light with a smile!

What I mean by that is that it's imperative to let lifters know what they did wrong in a cordial fashion. That is one reason why I don't like the cards. Too impersonal.

A great example is Gordan Santee. Gordan will red light you, call you over and tell you what you did wrong and how to get it right. He's not going to give you a gift BUT you, as a lifter, get the feeling that he wants you too succeed on the next one.

I've tried to model myself after him on that and I think most of the refs here in Cali (in USAPL, APF and USPF) try to do the same. You can be strict but do it without being a jerk.

The other thing is admit you're human. IF you make a mistake and miss one or the spotters get in the way - just say that's what happened when someone asks you. I've heard about one ref that actually told someone he could see 1/5000 of an inch in squat depth. (or something similarly riduculous). That has got to stop. Fortunatley, he hasn't reffed a meet in years.

Anyway, good points.

JB
