I think I agree with most of your post here Deep. Besides taking the opportunity to harass you there is also one key aspect that needs to be kept in mind if you want to increase membership... it's not just about attracting more people it's about making an effort to keep whom you already have. It should be an easy sell!

But often we shoo tourselves in the foot.
