In Response To: Re: How is the 10.11 rule is abused (tom isbell)

Like you, my initial reaction was that Siders must have seen something like this coming since he had received a warning and apparently just went ahead with it. I was mistaken.

I've been on the phone today with several people and Brian's was indeed concerned about a possible sanction.

However, to say that Brian Siders ignored the IPF warning and "did it anyway" as some are posting is false.

Apparently, Brian contacted, via an intermediary, the IPF President Norbert Wallauch to ask what he needed to do to lift in the Strength Challenge for Cash while avoiding a suspension. In his query, it was spelled out that:

1)The Strength Challenge was a separate exhibition event and not part of the USPF Sanctioned USPF Senior Nationals that Ed Coan would be lifting in.

2) Brian would not be lifting in the Seniors. He would lift only in the Strength Challenge.

The reply he received from Mr Wallauch stated that he didn't see a problem for Brian provided that:

"1. this exhibition is definitely not a part of the USPF Senior Nationals where Ed Coan is competing,

2. no suspended lifter is competing together with or against Brian Siders at the Strength Challenge for Cash and

3. no combined score sheet will show Brian together with suspended lifters."

This reply was closed with a wish to see Brian and his rep at the Worlds in Norway. Interestingly enough, this reply was Cc'd to several IPF officials.

Clearly, Brian Siders did not dismiss the warning of the IPF and did, in fact, contact it's highest official to ensure that he would not act counter to the intentions of the IPF.

What is also clear is that he received clearance, and well wishes, from the IPF President.

What is not clear to me is how he then received a sanction. Either the IPF President was being duplicitous - which I do not believe to be the case or he, Mr Wallauch, was overridden by others in the IPF.

If that is the case, I'd like to know what justification there is for the suspension. I've spoken to Matt McCase and he verified to me that the stipulations required in the letter were met and that, most importantly, Brian and Ed Coan did not lift against each other.

My personal opinion is that this decision is totally and completely wrong. I hope the USAPL officials and it's athletes AND it's sponsors who support the IPF financially are seriously considering punitive action against the IPF should this not be overturned very quickly.

It is undeniable that Brian Siders acted in good faith and did, in fact act in an honorable and aboveboard fashion in this manner.

This, in my opinion, is another case of selective enforcement of a bad rule and quite possibly another example of anti-Americanism and definitely another attempt to embarass Ed Coan. The IPF seems to consistently forget that they are supposed to be there for the athletes and not the other way around.

In closing, I would say this to the IPF. Ed Coan has been punished for failing drug tests. Let it end there. Ed Coan is not evil incarnate and lifters will not be tarnished by knowing the man. He is generous with his knowledge and has made many efforts to help drug free lifters better themselves.

Even after he was banned by the IPF, he has spoken very highly of the IPF Worlds calling it, "the big show." Ed will never set foot on the IPF stage again. You've seen to that. That is punishment enough for the greatest powerlifter ever born. There is no need to persecute Ed Coan or other lifters. Let him live out his life in peace.
