Yes, there are computer programs. Not all meet directors use them, nor do you need one as it is really easy to figure out.

I hate competing against one or two other lifters. for competitive reasons it is nice to have a packed weight class and where you place means a lot more.

It is easy to question how much one award costs, but it is never just one award. It often turns into more awards. I run a high school meet and usually have just about a lifter in every weight class, both JV and varsity. Awards are a huge cost for me, it cost me between $500-700. They are not always the awards that I would like to give, but thy are the most cost effective.

The only thing else to do is raise the entry fee. If I do that then the lifter might as well just buy a trophy on their own. Nobody is getting rich as a meet director. If I break even or have some money for the next meet that is fine.
