In Response To: meet results (dennis)

Dennis, I am very sorry that you feel the way that you do. I was equally as surprised as you when we tabulated the scores in your division by using the WILKES FORMULA and found that you had finished 2nd. I had Diane check it twice to be sure. But because you weighed in at 231 and were not at your usual weight of 208 - 211 you put yourself at a disadvantage by having to lift substantially more weight than your competition. Had you made your last deadlift or had chosen a more conservative 3rd attempt squat of 650 instead of 700 you would have won. The previous meets where you won back to back best lifter awards, beating all of your competition, you were much lighter & totaled pretty close to what you did last Saturday. I do not own a gym, coach no lifters and have no desire to affect the outcome of our contests. I leave that to the individual lifters to do by going out on the platform & doing their best while abiding by the rules set by our organization. The lifter that beat you is close friends with one of the judges but if recall, that judge DID NOT officiate on ANY of his lifts because he was helping him. The official had the the foresight to remove himself from the chair during his lifts. What is disappointing though is that you chose not to congratulate the lifter that won, who had the best day of his life, lifting 10 for 10 due to a misload! Had he missed his last deadlift, we probably would not be having this duscussion. When you won your two best lifter awards, I always took the time to recognize your efforts during the awards ceremony & did so again this past Saturday. I have no interest in determining the outcome of our contests. These meets are for the lifters like yourself, to come & compete amongst your peers. I have been running meets since 1979 & I don't do it for the money! Just look at the car that I drive! We all do the best that we can putting on these contests. Powerlifting isn't perfect & our meets are not perfect. There is always room for improvement. We do the best that we can. Ask Fred Archembault how he felt as we honored his achievements at the end of the contest, lifting & competing at 83 years old! Or ask yourself how you felt when we acknowledged your efforts last year when you had won back to back Best Lifter awards! I didn't see your competition writing about your victories being tainted. I am truly sorry that you feel the way that you do. If it was me, I would use it as a positive and hit the the gym harder than ever so to come back in May to reclaim your crown! I hope that you understand how I feel and I hope that you will return in May because you truly have been an inspiration to the lifters by the squats & benches that you do. In closing, I hope that everyone who reads this will remember the phrase "be part of the solution to the problem, not part of the problem." Everyone should strive to make our organization better, not try to tear it down. There is a right way & a wrong way to get one's point accross. I hope that our founding father Brother Bennett would be proud of our accomplishments, as he started the ADFPA (USAPL) based on the pricipals of fair & drug tested competition for all who met the 3 year drug free period. I would think that he would want us to settle our differences in a positive way for the good of the sport. Leave the tearing down to the the other federations. Well, as Forest Gump would say, "That's all I've got to say about that!" To Dennis & all who are reading this, have a wonderful Thanksgiving & God Bless!

Sincerely yours,

Greg Kostas
