Garry and Elliot,
I think the problem is that we think toward what we'd llie to see and to the IPF model.

What we are missing here, and we shouldn't miss it, is that 90% of our lifters are never going to go to men's Nationals. For them it's about meets they like or what meet director puts on a good meet close to home or a record thats attainable to them.

They might like to read about Tony Harris and care what suit he wears or what his favorite tricep movement is but they don't have his genetics or desire or drive. Maybe they don't even have my genetics or desire (check for a pulse LOL) but for them the submaster 181 record is within reach or maybe they saw some guy win a sword and they are within 20 lbs of that guy etc. Everyone draws motivation from somewhere.

It could even be something as simple as getting your name mentioned in the meet writeup in PLUSA and showing your kid, grandkid, best friend, or whoever. That is one area that I need to improve. I used to write good meet reports but have slacked off in that area.

We just need to figure out what makes lifters happy at all levels. For the elite lifters, it might be that shot at worlds but for many others (the bulk of the lifters regardless of federation, it can be a lot of different things.

Al made and good point, there is nothing wrong with wanting a nice trophy or sword for your efforts. If that best lifter sword gets you motivated for the next meet or training session, thats great. Different strokes for different folks. We talk about respecting other people but sometimes it's hard to do because we think so differently and may not even realize what gets someone elses juices flowing. (Tommy and Billy are not allowed to reply to this!!!! LOL)
