American Open - Some thoughts and thanks *LINK* *PIC*

I was hoping to have enough time earlier this week to post this but I did not want the week to close before I expressed my sincere and deep appreciation to everyone who attended and helped out at this year’s American Open in Palm Springs.

Obviously, I am really pleased to hear that many of you enjoyed your experience here in California. As some have pointed out, the quality of the lifting was truly outstanding. Some thoughts… Priscilla Ribic amazed everyone with her record setting performance… Cheryl Anderson shocked a few guys that had never seen such a small woman lift huge weight… it was great to see Charr Gahagan and Odd Haugen back on the platform… Ryan Spencer lifted well in his first national meet and Al Fritz lifted BIG, really impressive. Punch his ticket to Men’s Nationals.

I have shared with our meet staff that, as a whole, I truly believe that USA Powerlifting has the most talented people supporting our national events. The ONLY thing I give myself credit for is having the wisdom to recognize that and asking for their involvement and support.

To that point, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Rob Keller, our Technical Secretary and an outstanding group of international referees who sat on the platform- Jack Marcus, Bill Ennis, Ron Scott and Johnny Graham. Actually, throughout the weekend Johnny was a man of many talents- serving as referee one day and as platform manager and interim announcer on the other. This is a man who is true to his word. He was there to help me “wherever I needed him”.

We truly had a “national-level” score table with some of best talent from around the country. A huge thanks to Lanette Lopez from TX who ran the cards, Angela Simon from MN who ran the scoring program, Hung Pham from CA who ran the BarLoad program and Niko Huslander from PA who kept everyone entertained with great announcing.

SPECIAL THANKS to our platform crew who did a great job making sure that the meet ran at a world-level pace and ensuring the safety of the lifters- Jason Burnell, John Planas, Tony Harris and Tyler Whitney.

Finally, I would like to thank all of our sponsors who made a significant contribution to help produce a meet of this standard. Thanks to Inzer Advance Designs, Michael Wolmelsdorf of MW Builders, Lothar Vallot of OV Diamonds, Custom Special Tees, Strength & Power Productions and House of Pain Ironwear.
