In Response To: Since you asked (Jim Ray)

It appears that we have come full circle to discuss one of the reasons why the press signal was removed in the first place. Currently, the lifter determines when he/she has made the bar motionless, before pressing the bar to completion leaving the control in the hands of the individual who is trying to perform the lift per the rules. For the experienced lifter, this was an easy adaptation to determine motionless, but to the novice it became a problem with many coaches yelling press from the sidelines. Now that the head judge makes the motionless determination starting in 2007, it again brings back the controversy between head and side judges. By bringing back the press signal the term “motionless” is determined by the head judge before giving the command “press”. Have heard this complaint before that the head judge gave the press command because he/she felt the bar was motionless but… the side judges gave the lifter a red because in their opinion it was not motionless. I personally think the membership will be happy that the “press” command is coming back but also feel that the discrepancy between head and side judges will also come back. I would like to think that the side judges will somewhat rely on the head judge in making this determination because of the better view point from the head seat and the sides while paying attention to the motionless…keep a better eye on my opponents ass on the bench where the head judge has a poor view point.

Hope Everybody has a Nice Christmas and that you all receive 3 white lights on the bench in 2007.
