In Response To: Re: New Rules (Bob)

"Yes I have lifted in the USAPL since about 93."

That's about the same time I started. We were still ADFPA and the head was on the bench. It wasn't until the rules changes of a few years back that all the head raising, foot sliding stuff started so really we are getting back to where we started with the return on the press and the head and feet being in the same spot. The start command is and addition (and I think it's a good one) to the old stuff with the way things are now.

" I can not honestly say at every single meet I saw everyone benching with their heads on the bench or not. So being who you are in the USAPL, if you say it was a rule before then I believe you."

Thank you for your faith but I think we all need to remember two things.

We are all USAPL members and none of us is "better" or more important than anyone else. Don't defer to me because I have a big mouth or run meets or am a ref. Read the rule book and keep current - I'm only partially dircting that to you, Bob, we all need to keep up to date (and it's not easy given the yearly changes LOL)

" As a lifter, it is annoying to think that I could get red lighted because my head came off the bench. I could see red lighted for my butt coming up, uneven extension, or whatever else. But when we get down to a red light because the head came up, MY OPINION, I don't think that is neccessary. It's not like a lifter gains unfair advantage because their head came up. If anything, the head coming up probably causes the chest to collapse a little. Anyway, this is just one tiny lifter's opinion."

Bob, here's my opinion on that and why I think it's a good thing. Anyone in the gym can do a sloppy lift with head liftng, feet flailing, bar moving up and down etc. The sport of powerlifting is about lifting the most weight but also about power, strictness and control of that weight. The old rules regarding pody positioning as well as the press command ensured that the lifts were done in a certain, in my opinion, proper fashion. When we started tinkering with the press command and foot movement and lifting body parts, it led to sloppier lifting and touch and go benches and, in my opinion, started us down a bad path. It's taken some time but I think the IPF is starting to put us back on a good path as far as this goes.

Personally, I like to see big weights but I also like to see lifts done where there isn't a lot of question whether the lift was good or not. Those lifts simply take your breath away and make you say "wow." Wow is good.

Best wishes,
Jason
