Conversely, with the head ref giving the press command you are only satisfying one ref. If he says "press" you can satisfactorily completed that portion on the lift.

With 3 refs and no "press" command, you have to satisfy 3 refs who may all have differnent ideas of what constitutes a proper pause.

While I have been to a couple of meets where the head ref would hold you seemingly forever, those are few and far between. Most of the time, the refs wait for a pause and give the signal pretty quickly. Refs who pull that old "but the plates were vibrating" or "the end of the bar was oscillating" should be removed and possibly beaten. (ok, I'm kidding about the beating parts - we should love our refs as we love ourselves)
