Message to Minnesota USAPL Lifters - State Records

Posted By: Cheryl Anderson
Date: Tuesday, 21 April 2009, at 9:46 a.m.

From October 2008 until the 2009 Minnesota State Meet this past February, a major project took place that affected the Minnesota USAPL powerlifting records -- allowing them to be examined with fresh sets of eyes, corrected, restored, updated, re-organized for clarity, and polished-up with a brand-new, consistent format. I was asked to take on the voluntary job of State Record Keeper by our state chair and accepted the opportunity.

The original/old state records files (before I began to update them) were captured and saved in HTML format from the state USAPL website, as well as passed along to me in Word docs (labeled “updated” as of Oct. 27-30, 2008), which I have saved. In both formats, our state records were missing information (including entire sets of weight class and division records), were disorganized, and contained numerous mistakes, causing several of our members to miss receiving credit for their lifting accomplishments over the past months or years.

These records had been maintained for 10 years by the same person, never updated or corrected corrected by any other volunteers until that point.

Powerlifting records kept inaccurately can cause a chain reaction of mistakes throughout several years, affecting a number of lifters -- until someone finally goes back, locates the correct info, and restores them to the correct data. This can be an extremely time-consuming and tedious job that requires patience, attention to detail, and -- most of all -- caring enough to cross-check your work with past meet results, and even using the past years’ rankings lists to locate and verify the “true” records as they should be.

With help from other lifters including, and especially, Mitch Edelstein, I voluntarily worked to not only update our state powerlifting records and reformat them to spreadsheets convertible to PDF files, but to also restore the large number of missing records and correct many, many mistakes (ranging from incorrect dates to incorrect poundages). Mitch used his familiarity with many lifters to provide full names and exact dates of competitions where available, as well as lift corrections; and he suggested using kilos in addition to pounds. We took things a few steps further and went though the full meet records and matched them to past meet results and USAPL rankings database lists for accuracy.

Mistakes and human error can happen, yes. But entire weight classes missing, wrong names in place of other lifters, and records that had never been credited in the last 4-5 years -- to name just a few of the “mistakes” -- we felt were unacceptable. The number of these instances totaled in excess of 30 occurrences.

The number of restorations, corrections and updates affected 18 USAPL Minnesota lifters, listed below. If you see your name on this list, you have been positively affected by the restorations and corrections that Mitch and I made (this process had been also been reviewed by Angela Simons, Joe Warpeha and Tom Hines). One or more of your state records had been corrected, or were restored after being deleted or “getting lost,” or they were given overdue credit for the first time (3 need to have their records found and restored):

Angela Simons
Jane Larsen-Welborn
Cheryl Anderson
Peter Wong
Tony Scheldrup
Paul Wong
Pat Beaumaster
Tony Reid
Sean McDermott
Brad Gillingham
Phillip Markert
Tammy Dian
Cheri Schouweiler
Joel Ford
John Dorsher

These lifters' records had been deleted when the 97 lb. Junior Women Powerlifting state records were found to be deleted, and the class/division has been placed back (but info still missing as it cannot be found):
Kacie Groves
K. Milbrandt
A. Peterson

(My own 97 lb. class records had been deleted completely - from the powerlifting Open and Junior divisions, as well as from the bench single-lift records. If I hadn’t known my own records, I would not have been able to restore them. Therefore, these are missing.)

For full details of all corrections and restorations that we made to the MN USAPL records, please see below.

A comparison of these, to the “original” (old) state record files, can be made by obtaining the original/old files from USAPL Vice President Johnny Graham at (email address).

I no longer update the state records, as the former state record keeper who had resigned from this task, apparently later wanted his job back and the new state chair asked me to "give a little" and hand them back.

It had never communicated to the MN members that USAPL had new volunteers who stepped up to the task when needed, and had spent the time to do this work.

Thank you; it was a great opportunity to help our fellow state lifters get the well-deserved updates, corrections and credit for the PL accomplishments they worked hard to achieve.
