JT, it isn't always that simple. I don't know if you've seen any of the streaming video offered by the IPF, but I have. (I donated too.)

Start commands seemed quite long in coming, for those that were allowed to lift. Some bombouts were due to the Head Judge not allowing the lifter to start, due to excessive arch. The line was quite fine as to whether their buttocks were on enough or not.

Some may have opened with something could normally hit easily at home, but were affected by the travel, etc. and didn't make adjustments. Also, there's strategy involved, regarding either team points, and/or an individual medal. Playing it safe isn't always the way to go.
