In Response To: Re: RAW--Knee wraps (Larry Maile)

"While my position is that wraps are more for safety than performance, they do add to a squat."

Larry, the way most of us wrap our knees so tight the safety factor goes out the window. The wraps do add to a squat - no question. Not that that is a bad thing. Just not for a raw meet.

I would say, though, that wrist wraps are probably a good idea for safety.

"Some sentiment has been expressed that we are targeting other organizations' members. In some ways yes, but you will not see USAPL emailing, recruiting, or otherwise incentivizing lifters to come to USAPL."

Why not? Perhaps emailing or mailing is a bad idea but recruiting and incentivizing is the American way.

" Rather, you will see the pride of ownership. We believe that USAPL offers the best overall, and most professional package: consistent judging, invariate drug testing, well run meets, and a great community that has continued for almost three decades.

I agree BUT:

" We believe that people who try us will like us."

That depends on their background. If they are new lifters they will probably like a well run meet period. IF they come from a background where they have seen high squats as the norm they will think that we are too strict and as we all know the angry people are the loudest talkers (except for me, I'm always happy. I just love the sound of my own voice)

" To allow new lifters to come in and try a USAPL meet in an atmosphere in which they can both be competive and not have the initial investment in equipment can only be good for both us and for them."

That may be true for the youngsters, especially those with low incomes or for those with parents who are tired of shelling out $$$ for several sports.

However, I doubt that it will have an effect on adults who simply want to compete. I recall prior to my first meet, I asked Musto what I needed. He told me to get some wraps, a belt and a z-suit and a blast shirt. So I did.

" I suspect that many will move on to geared competition, at least some of the time. By the same token, I expect that some lifters who have competed primarily equipped will try raw. Most likely not as a consistent modality (although some may) but as a change of pace. It is another new challenge and who doesn't want to try something new?"

That is how I've always viewed it. Another challenge. Not my main effort but another one.

"So, I believe that the raw division will be success, as will be the raw nationals.

Time will tell.

" Does it detract from the equipped divisions? I don't think so. "

That is one issue that I have seen in the past. With the number of weight classes and then the masters increments you often wind up with very few lifters actually lifting against each other when you have to duplicate everything again raw. Open 198, Open Raw 198, Master 1 198, Master 1 Raw 198 and so on.

It can get pretty watered down. That's one complaint I've had.

"And USAPL has NO, I repeat, NO plan to eliminate equipment."

Good.
