In Response To: What is a reasonable entry fee? (Harold Gaines)

For me, I've factored in the costs of putting on the meet so - it depends on what the costs are going to be - testing, awards, food for staff, venue costs, equipment costs, etc.

So, if you do drug tested meets, include meet shirts in the entry, food and/or beverages and the post meet pizza and beer extravaganza for the spotters/staff/judges who stick around etc then your costs will be higher.

On a funny side note: While I won't say that lifters do not care what the cost is, they are less swayed by a 5-10 dollar difference than you might think. I experimented with a low cost division at one meet with certificates as prizes. Only 2 or 3 people entered that while the rest entered the regular cost division.

As someone else pointed out, here in California, costs range from about 50-99 dollars depending on fed and meet. While I think 99 is pretty outrageous, people do pay it - and I've paid it, too because I wanted to lift in that meet.

There are regional differences though. Rickey Crain once told me he'd have big problems if he tried to run a meet on Oklahoma at the same prices we do here. Then again, everything is expensive here.

Having run meets myself I'm not going to complain about another meet directors entry fees because I know that you are usually 10 lifters can make a difference between losing $500+ and breaking even and I've seen friends lose more than that if the turnout is lower than expected - hotel still wants to be paid, T-shirt guys want's to get paid etc. I just make up my mind about whether I want to lift there or not.

I have a spreadsheet that I use to monitor costs, I pretty much know what the break even point is and what I can afford to do. I set it up so that when I enter a lifter and his/her shirt size, my shirt count goes up. I also use it to track drug test cost/count and number of awards needed.

Based on the spreadsheet I'm able to avoid bleeding cash and if the turnout is good, I can then put more extras into the meet - more food, drinks, snacks, new equipment, etc. or even an 8 foot inflatable snowman in an Inzer T shirt!

I've also used the roster on the sheet to cut and paste my divisions and flights. I'm sure I could streamline that process so that when I enter a name and division, it would automagically do my flights but I am only one man. LOL

Damn, I wrote too much again.
