Eric, this is an interesting topic.

" The worst part is the door money. There is always people who complain about paying the $10 cover charge.

At the local meets/gym meets I normally don't charge at the door. I'm trying to get the gym members and the public to come in and check it out. If they have to pay, they'll just walk on by.
One of the coolest meets we had, had people just walking in off the streets to check it out. I'm to sure why but they actually packed the gym and people were hanging over the upstairs half wall to watch the lifting. Maybe it was the local lifter in the newspaper that brought them in. Maybe it was the rain storm. LOL

On the other hand, at meets where we've rented an expensive venue - like NVC at 1000+1150 for the weekend - we've charged a mimimal cover 5-10 bucks. (Kids in free) It hasn't been a problem overall.

" At bodybuilding shows they charge $25-50 and still pack the places."

I've noticed the same thing but the shows I've been to that charge that are at very nice venues - convention centers, etc. The difference is that even though bodybuilding is something of a cult sport, it is still much more popular than our sport. Bodybuilding supports a ton of magazines... er catalogs, several clothing lines and many huge supplement companies.

We, on the other hand, can support one magazine and a few equipment manufacturers. We're not as financially viable or as visible yet. We're not on TV much and even in the gyms, if you tell people you're a powerlifter, they still make that overhead pressing motion with that question mark on their face while they say, yeah, like this, huh?"

" I have the same problem as you in the cost department, it is expensive in the Northeast. Now if only people would pay $25 dollar door charge that would make expenses easier."

So here is the interesting part, how do we get from here to there? How do we drive the interest up so that people want to see us?

I've heard that the PL part of the Arnold is huge. I also know that most people that have played a sport or been to the gym have at least seen a squat and a bench. How do we get them on our side?

Just to throw this out there - since BB is more well known, why can't we promote the PLs that look more like bodybuilders but are strong as hell?

One example, Captain Kirk. His 1000 lbs squat vid and that clip of him in Finland I think where the crowd is clapping and chanting are hugely impressive. Combine that with the shots of him when we went back to 242 and there is a guy that the average BB or "fitness" person can relate to.

I think there is a base there. Kirk was recenlty feature in a Parrillo newsletter and Coan has been in the past.

I just think that Americans are still very visually stimlated and part of getting from here to there is to give them something to look at. No offense to anyone but if you gave me a choice between an 800 squat and looking like Kirk or a 900 squat and being a fat, round guy with 3 chins and that "pack of hotdogs on the back of the neck" look, I'd have to go with the 800 squat and I think 90% of the rest of the world would too.
