The dilemma of how to both sustain the sport and promote the sport is certainly at question here.
Free entry allows for a large number of attendees.
While charging allows you to keep entry fees low and pay your staff. One could argue that there are very few sports that do not charge an admission fee. Even high school events often have a charge, at least around here during the state tournaments.
Though bodybuilding might use better facilities, they do not need the same type of man power.
A 50 lifter meet needs roughly:
5-10 spotters, 3-6 judges, 1-3 table help
That is about 15-20 people. Even if you just feed this help and give them a meet shirt it will roughly cost you about $20 15people x $20= $300 and that is at the low end. If I can afford it I always try to give the help more then that.By the way I run the Mass High School meet and charge only $35. I also charge $5 at the door. If I am lucky I walk away with $100-200 most of that goes back into new equipment.
The state chair here charge $50 and has a $10 entry fee. He has charged the same door fee for about 25 years.
