Ditto . I tore my left biceps completely at the distal back in 1993 while in a wrestling tournament. (I wrapped up the dislodged bicep with a power knee wrap and finished the last two matches.) I had the surgery from both sides as described. It places the dislodged end of the biceps tendon right in the bone. I recovered slow and smart, and actually won a wrestling tournament less than a year later. As far as lifting, I have never been a deadlifter, just would always do a 500 for a total when I had to, but again, just kept the left as the overhand side. My bench press came back nicely, getting back to 500 raw in a year.
Depending on how much is torn, you have to decide on surgery or not. If it is partial, you could lead a relatively normal life, but the heavy deadlifts and other sports may be dangerous. If you have the surgery, there is life after a succesful reattachment.
