I haven't seen that myself, but since I have only gone to raw competitions in recent years, that fits with your theory. I would say that it makes a lot of sense that with the surging bench amounts made possible by the newer shirts, and by multi-ply shirts, that non-supported areas, like thumbs, would be under greater stress.

If some people are breaking their thumbs from the weight of the bar while benching, imagine how quickly the bar would have left their hands with a thumbless grip. You wouldn't have people with broken thumbs, but would have a lot more with broken ribs (or worse).
