You can drop the weight while you are squatting and stand a pretty good chance of not getting hurt - maybe a few scrapes or bumps depending on whether the bar goes down your back or over your head. You are pretty much guaranteed getting hurt if you drop the bar while benching, potentially severely depending on the path of the bar.

Rapidly improving shirt technology and accompanying increasing weights definitely contribute to danger from drops. While higher squat amounts from improved suits/wraps doesn't increase safety, I don't know that it increases risk to the lifter very much.
