There are several misconceptions regarding the database that need correction. Mike Armstrong's database was his, not the USAPL's. Costs to maintain the database were growing at an alarming rate. The costs had become almost 5% of the USAPL's total revenue, so the decision was made to bring the service in-house. Brad Madvig and Mike Sampson volunteered to build a system that would replace the existing. They did not volunteer to manually enter the 150+ USAPL plus IPF meet results. It is too large an undertaking to expect two volunteers to handle the entire workload.

We are in the process of standardizing our results system to grant meet directors the ability to upload directly to the "Madson" database. Without standardized electronic upload of information volunteers will be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of data causing ranking and results to be incomplete. Mike Sampson and Joe Marksteiner are designing an applet to upload data directly from Joe's scoring program. They are also designing a "best results" spreadsheet for State and Local meets not utilizing the Marksteiner scoring program.

Future enhancements to the system will not only provide rankings for myriad competition classes, it will also provide results for all USAPL meets. Published comprehensive meet results available to all members are something that we have never had in the USAPL. To accomplish our goal we need to enlist State Chairmen, along with local meet directors, to ensure that the “best result” spreadsheet is uploaded to the rankings database. We seek the cooperation of all involved to allow the system to function as designed. We can work together to make the system the best in the Powerlifting world. If meet directors and State Chairmen perform their roles we will be able to offer rankings encompassing all USAPL meets on a real time basis. We have only one national meet and international results left to manually input into the database to produce rankings for 2008. We will have 2009 mid-year rankings, based on manually input National and International meet results, within 30-45 days after the close of the second quarter.

USA Powerlifting will continue to improve and refine database options available to our members. It has taken significant time and effort on the part of those who have volunteered their time for this endeavor. There are many to thank for the progress in the new system: Brad Madvig, Mike Sampson, Angela Simons, Priscilla Ribic and Joe & Cathy Marksteiner. The results and rankings database will complete the transformation of our Internet presence begun by Tony Cardella and Lea Hendricks with their excellent work redesigning the USA Powerlifting website.

Moving forward there will be problems with roll out and growth of the system. Please be patient. I ask our members to grow with us and help move the system forward. Help us ensure that all meet results are entered into the database. Together we can turn a potential problem into an opportunity for direct participation by our members.
