I believe significant gains in strength and reps willed be gained by doing the following:
250 Lbs to almost failure for as many sets and reps as possible within a somewhat precise 15 minute period. Record the number of sets and reps and do whatever assistance work you feel will help him for the rest of the workout. Repeat this when you feel he has recovered sufficiently (2-5 days) and compare sets and reps change within the 15 minutes again. It seems to me to be crucial to minimize rest between sets (1 to 2 minutes with 1 minute as goal). When he increases total reps by 10%, go up to 265 lbs. again within a 15 minute window. After about 5 workouts like this, I would on the next workout, have him max out with 185 to 200 lbs to see progress and get body used to higher reps.Depending on this result, adjust further workouts accordingly.

Someone got the crazy idea of doing 10,000 lbs of work in one set of squats or benches and we put up a board in the gym with the names of the guys that did it and the weight and reps performed.
I used a workout similar to that to do 33 squats with 315 lbs at 181 at age 50. It was a near death experience that won't be repeated just reported.
