In Response To: Re: clarification of meet rules (gina)

Gina is correct that lifting raw and equipped in the same event has been allowed in past contests, including the recently held BP Nationals in Cleveland.

Over the past few weeks, this issue has been discussed at length among the EC and as well as with Robert Keller, Chair of the Technical Committee.

The EC has made the determination that lifters will not be able to do both in the same event. Obviously, the decision was not going to impact the recently held BP Nats but it will be the rule moving forward.

The rationale for the decision is primarily based on ensuring that every lift (in particular State and American records) can be certified as being raw.

Scenario: Lifter A opens raw and misses. Repeats opening lift (raw) on second attempt and is successful. Puts on a shirt on third attempt and misses. Although this example is just one lifter in one contest, it requires that the burden fall on every official (judges & meet director) to "monitor" every attempt for this lifter and any other who would choose to lift this way as the meet progresses to ensure if each and every attempt meets the criteria of "raw". Also note that is issue is not just related to BP only, it involves three lift events.

EX: A lifter wants to lift equipped in the SQ (singlet but uses knees wraps) and BP (bench shirt) but wants to set DL state raw records in a singlet only.

As you can see, the issue of certifying attenpts accurately can become extremely complicated. Hence, the need to draw a line with respect to this rule.

Lifters may do BOTH if they are lifting in separate events (i.e., A full meet and BP meet on the same day but lifting in separate flights). We had a lifter do that at the State Champs since the BP only contest was held first, then the PL event. The lifter competed equipped in the BP only and then raw for full PL.

Additionally, a lifter may compete in the Open Raw and Open Equipped in the same event provided that ALL attempts are made raw.

An official announcement on this issue will be forthcoming on the USAPL web site and to State Chairs.

Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions.
