I said:
I can't believe that any intelligent person or
group of persons at the head of the IPF at that
time could think they could tell USA lifters
where or when they could lift here.

Garry said:
Actually it was more of whom they could lift with. Remember apartheid? The IPF was not the only sport federation imposing restrictions on South African athletes at that time.

My response:
Apartheid was wrong. But was restricting competition with South Africa the right way to confront that type of prejudice? I do not like it when the Olympics is used for international political agenda by other nations as well as my own. When Hitler and the Nazis tried to use the Olympics for propaganda about the superiority of the pure Arian race, the best confrontation was the great success of Jessie Owns and other Black athletes at those games. The main purpose of the Olympics is to break down political barrier to improving better relationships and understanding between all nations and races. Ernie did the right thing as far as I'm concerned. He was following the Olympic Ideal better than the IOC at the time! It was not for money. There were only 20-40 lifters at that meet.
