In Response To: recieved a message that disturbed me.... (Jason Burnell)

"However, whom (who? which?) hasn't marvelled at some of the numbers over the last 5 years or so and wondered what is up? I've had my suspicions but they are only that. We know people use because, we see names added to the failure list when they get caught. Testing does work but we also know that not everyone gets tested. The $$$ simply don't allow it." Our best lifters are being tested several times a year so the idea that they are slipping through is unfounded. There is a presumption that the test is easy to beat. The fact that several APF lifters who have come to the USAPL have tested positive show that it is not all that easy. One of the lifters is a friend of mine and was "off" for more than a year when the test was administered. The USAPL has had a major impact on IPF drug testing. Increased testing at the international level is due to pressure applied primarily by the US. We were invited to participate in the Arnold partly because we do test. The Arnold has made it their mission to gradually phase out non-tested events from the festival. Our local and OMT program have improved greatly in the last few years and we have been approached to help other amatuer sports with the design for their programs. I would rather participate in a federation that is imperfect but working towards a goal, rather than compete where anything goes. We will continue to make strides in our testing program and will influence the IPF and others to do the same. It an age where it has become unacceptable to the public for athletes to use performance enhancing drugs it makes more sense than ever to be involved in a federation who is moving toward stricter compliance. To conclude, many of the amazing numbers being put up in recent years are due to improvements in gear. But that is a topic to be argued for another time.
