Larry/Jason:

Very interesting discussion...! During the past two years, here in Florida, we have worked and partnered with the Palm Beach County Sports Commission...

The West Palm Beach Sports Commission is designated as a Community Olympic Development Program, which falls under the patronage and organized by the United States Olympic Committee [USOC]…

Each year, during July, they hold a multi-sport Fitness Festival for two complete days, which over 3,000++ kids, from ages 6-13, come to the festival, and are exposed to the all of the Olympic and World Games Sports...

Two years ago, we were asked to attend, and will be back again this year in July for our third year…

Out of the entire multi-sport festival, guess which sport was the MOST popular?

Powerlifting!

After a brief demonstration, the kids’ line up to pull deadlifts with a 5lb aluminum bar and Styrofoam plates that made the bar like something Big Brad G. was going to pick up…

We also [demonstrate] Squats and Bench Presses…

More times than not, the kids stand and line up 25-30 deep to have their opportunity… Both boys and girls… Some are very talented and really enjoy the short clinics and come back and second and third time after trying and going through all of the other sport clinics offered…

Moreover, with the popularity of our clinic, came the news media, who were taking a huge number of pictures of the kids, lifting the Styrofoam weights… The media, parents, and camp counselors were very much in tune with what we were doing, and really liked our pledge of DRUG-FREE SPORT...

I would ask that everyone take some time to read the articles that I prepared for Powerlines the past two years, detailing the event and the outcome…

This year, I plan to coordinate some form of youth fitness contest and see what this brings. I.e. pushups, sit-ups, etc… and a contest judged on form and technique…

On a final note, I am assisted by college interns from Florida Gulf Coast University…

Overall, a wonderful time for all! Please let me know if you would like to take part...

Thank you!
