Steve could have so easily been the first British powerlifter to total 1,000kg. I was training at the Grove Hall in Balham in the winter of 1979 and I remember buying Strength Athlete with the results from Dayton.

He had been on target for at least 837-495-837 but on the day had to bench carefully due to a torn shoulder.

I remember Steve at the 1982 Britain's Strongest Man competing against the likes of Ray Nobile, Mike Winch, Sulby Prince, Pete Welch & Geoff Capes.

He grabbed the bumper bar on the deadlift car, grinned at the camera and said "Now, this is my forte".

And it was.
