In Response To: distal biceps tear/rupture (Jeff Cardinal)

Jeff,
April 1 was the 3 year anniversary of my biceps tear. Mine was a total detachment of the distal end of the left biceps tendon. I had it reattached 10 days later. Apparently the window for a good chance of a full recovery is about two weeks. There are two methods of reattachment: one requires two incision, one on each side of the arm while the other and most popular method in the U.S. is done with a single incision. You can read about the pros and cons of both on the internet.
My recovery time was much longer than I expected. For a couple of months I wore a custom made spring loaded brace that was designed to relieve any stress on the tendon. After the brace came off it was a slow process to rehabilitate the arm and shoulder. It was a full year before I was back to full use and mobility.
My injury happened doing rack pulls. I was using an over under grip and the bar rolled in my hands and I instinctively tried to hold on to it. Big mistake -- you can't curl 600 lbs. My arm is now pretty much back to full strength, (I recently pulled 674) but I did switch my deadlift grip, making my repaired arm the the overhand side.
Hopefully your injury is not as severe as mine, but if it is the only real option is to get it fixed. This is an injury that will not repair itself. Good Luck.
