In Response To: Arnold Classic (John Caldwell)

Hi John,

At this time, there is no raw bench press competition at the Arnold Sports Festival. The powerlifting events at the Arnold offers limited competition opportunities due to the time constraints. To that end, all of the events are by invitation with invitation criteria posted at www.usapowerlifting.com.

In short, USAPL’s presence at the Arnold is to strengthen powerlifting’s popularity to a potentially huge audience (over 200,000 attend the festival throughout the weekend) by showcasing some of the best drug-free lifters in the US and around the world in four elite exhibition competitions. In all, approximately 130 athletes will compete as part of four events- the IPF Titan Bench Bash, the IPF GNC Pro Performance Deadlift, the Quest Invitation and the CON-CRET Raw Challenge.

Additionally, there are no age-based divisions as part of the Arnold events but MANY of the athletes selected to compete are Masters-age lifters (i.e., Greg Page, Mike Bridges, Tony Harris, Dan Gaudreau, Brad Gillingham, Craig Terry, Dave Ricks, Pat McGettigan, Sean Culnan, Steve Lewis, Donovan Thompson, Ron Garofalo, Jim Brown, Bill Schmidt, Daniel Mahan, Rich Edinger, Sioux-z Hartwig-Gary, Ellen Stein, Deborah Ferrell and Harriet Hall. I may have missed a few but you get the point.

The perfect venue for you to see how you fare against the best in the USA is the USAPL Bench Press Nationals. This championship typically has approximately 120-150 lifters, men & women, teen to Masters. Historically, there has been a raw division offered at Bench Press Nationals. The 2009 championship will be held on Sept. 12-13 in Cleveland, OH.

Best of luck with your lifting in 2009!

Lance Slaughter
