:maybe the uspf really should be reinstated as the :ipf affiliate.

Tommy, I'm actually glad you mentioned that because it's a topic that has come up more than once. I think in the short term it MIGHT lead to more wins however I'm not even totally convinced of that BUT in the long term, given the prevailing climate, it would lead to more test failures, suspensions and sanctions (which means smaller teams).

Here's what I mean. Regardless of whether the affiliate is USAPL or USPF, things aren't going to change much and here's why. With the WADA rules in place, there will have to be OMT of some type, the IPF isn't going to allow testing to be reduced to a lower level.

An argument is often made that the US isn't sending the "Best lifters" to the Worlds and if you consider totals it would seem that that is the case. However, several of the "Best" have lifted in USPF/The Cup (similar gear and depth) in recent years and their totals have decreased significantly - in my opinion largely due to gear and squat depth.

Our best and most consistent medal hope, Ed Coan, at 220 or 242, has a lifetime ban and unless that is lifted, there is no one else that has lifted in that type of gear to those standards that has proven to put up numbers that would win. Karwoski is another. At 275, in the current gear, who knows what Kirk could do? But Kirk has said he's retired. Who else at 275 could do what Kirk can and hit IPF depth in single ply and pass the drug test. Who else HAS DONE it? Cardella is a buddy and is getting better every year but he'd be the first to tell you he's got a way to go to be at Kirk's level. People often mention Goggins as the one and he's definitely got the power. However, his lean forward type of squat would more than likely cause depth problems in the IPF and his poundage in the squat would suffer. He's never been known for a huge bench and would have to make
up the difference in the dead - which if anyone could do, he could. However, would it be enough given what the winners are doing now? Who knows. Besides if he was interested in the IPF Worlds, he'd be going.

Maybe a couple of the lighter guys migh tmake a difference but we've already got Hooper who is one of the best. Then there is Siders? He's probably the best overall right now. That kid Jason Beck at 220 is incredible and just took second in his first Worlds.

It's just that having seen many vids and taking into account squat depth, gear and testing, I'm not sure that many of the "best" could a) hit close to the same numbers or b) make it past the squats.

The other factor, which I mentioned earlier is that when you have a test failure, your team gets penalized by one lifter the next year plus the whole world team is subject to OMT 6 months prior to the next Worlds. IF the USA sends a gassed team to the Worlds, they are going to get tested a lot and there will be failiures.

The chatter is always that the test is easy to beat (despite the long failure lists) but with 6 months OMT guys are going to get tested.

Unless you are suggesting that if the USPF took over that they'd test like the "allegedly" old Iron Curtain days and test not to weed out users but to make sure guys are below 6:1 and that they are on drugs that won't show up. There is some validity to that idea but if it worked guys would still have to deal with depth and gear. Also, a testing program geared to that end, would take money and I'm not sure where that would come from.

USAPL isn't going to do that. That's for sure. That brings up a whole different set of questions on ethics and ideals etc.

:hi jason.... thanks for the invite over here. i'm :sure my input will be highly valued by all usapl
:members. hehe.

I'm not sure "all" would be the right estimate. LOL

Hey, I'm all for dissenting viewpoints as long as people are respectful of each other.
