In Response To: Re: I'd try to play better (Jason " Too S.E.X.Y. " Burnell)

(Deep): I don't think it's that simple. He could play very well but the fans will still clamor for Favre. It would be a PR nightmare if the Packers sat Favre.

(Jim): The fans love Favre because he's good. When he proves he can't play any more, the fans will clap as he leaves, then cheer the next guy, always remembering Favre warmly.

(Deep): As for Rodgers, I've only seen him play in one real game and that was last season when Favre got injured. Rodgers played very well in that one.

(Jim): If you mean the Dallas game, he got hurt at the end and was out 3 weeks. Favre started the next week, of course.

(Deep): Realistically though, he never has had a chance in Green Bay. As long as the legend is on the roster, there is no way anyone was going to start but Favre, no matter how good of a camp or preseason Rodgers or anyone else had.

(Jim): Well, at the intra-squad scrimmage last night, Rodgers threw 9 straight incompletions. How did Wash. 3rd-stringer Colt Brennan do against the Colts?

(Deep): At this point, with Favre on the roster, you really have to start Favre. Even if Rodgers out performs Favre in camp, Favre is a 16 year veteran who has pretty much seen every coach, defensive scheme and player there is. The catch 22 for Rodgers and the Packers is that the only way Rodgers will get that kind of experience is by playing BUT they got close last year and right now Favre gives them the best chance this season and maybe next season after he retires and unretires again and I think we all see that coming if he has a good year and another year left on his contract.

(Jim): Well, official word is, there will be open competition. The way it should be every year.

(Deep): So the Packers are kind of stuck. No way they release him to see him go to the Vikings or Bears. No way they trade him to the Vikings or Bears.

(Jim): ESPN is reporting right now that there are unofficial reports that GB and Minn are talking. Conventional wisdom is, GB wouldn't let Favre go until the last cut, as that would give him the least amount of time to play in Minnesota's 1st game (against you-know-who).

(Deep): If they don't play Favre, they are pissing away his 12 million dollar salary and pissing off all the Packer fans who want to see him. If they do play Favre, they have him for a season or two.

(Jim): Again, IMO, keep Favre and Brohm - lose Rodgers.

(Deep): BUT Rodgers is a free man after this season. In my opinion, he'd be an idiot to re-sign with Green Bay if he wants to play this season or the next.

(Jim): Peter King said it best: GB now has 2 QBs that don't trust the coach or the GM.

(Deep): Green Bay is really in a good position for this season but a bad one for the next couple.

(Jim): In the next couple of years, CB might be a bigger question mark, with 2 aging starters.

(Deep): Packer fans are turning on Aaron Rodgers who hasn't done anything wrong but is just in a bad situation...If I was Aaron Rodgers, I think I'd hold my clipboard for a year, not make any comments to the media and just be as professional as possible...I just don't see the Packer fans warming to him....

(Jim): Too late. In the SI article, Rodgers said “I don’t feel I need to sell myself to fans. They need to get on board now, or keep their mouth’s shut.”

(Deep): Who knows who will be on the roster a season or two from now and if he doesn't deliver he'll get crucified.

(Jim): IMO, Brohm would be given the usual slack accorded a brand new QB next year or the next.
