I began lifting somewhat later in life than most, at age 35, and didn't enter my first meet until I was 54. Living in Dayton, Oh., and having known Larry Pacifico since the mid 60s, I sought and received the following advice:

One's opener should be a poundage they're positive can be completed, #2 should be a weight of which they're reasonably sure, and the third's where a gamble can be taken.

I realize the above is a simplictic approach, but heeding his words, I haven't bombed in 23 meets, and only missed my second attempt once.
