In Response To: recieved a message that disturbed me.... (Jason Burnell)

Wow that was some post. Not knowing the whole message but just my thoughts on the subject.

I have wanted to be an athlete ever since I saw Mary Lou Rehtton stick that vault at the Olympics. Never in my 15 years of powerlifting have I ever even considered the notion of using drugs. What is there to gain in this sport? Your picture on an obscure magazine that only other powerlifters read.....?!?! or how about the tons of cash you win oh wait we don’t win that either, I know they do it for that really awesome expensive real gold medal that you get when you win.... those probably aren’t real either... oh maybe its the all expense paid vacation you get to go on when you represent your country and have busted your ass to earn a spot on the most recognized team in the world, oh wait I pay for all that out of my own pocket toooo. Maybe it’s to forever have your name in the record books so that for one moment you are immortalized in history, mmm if they were ever updated on a regular basis, and someone from the general public could actually locate them that might be true to.......

The USAPL is the cleanest federation out there, we will always have idiots out there trying to sneak one by but they either are to stupid to win or not bright enough not to get caught. I personally know just about every single person on the open and bench only teams. And not only do I feel that their moral character would prevent them from being idiots I believe that they lift in the USAPL b/c they have the desire to be truly strong without chemical enhancers.

I think there are 2 main reasons that this train of thought (if they're that strong they must be on drugs) takes root.
1. Is attitude
2. They don’t take into consideration the advances in gear, sports specific training, and nutrition.

Attitude is everything and most of the guys at the top don’t even think about the guy they are competing against, if you do it’s a waste of mental energy and you should reconsider the reason you are even competing. Your goals should be numbers not I have to beat this person who I think is stronger than me, and is probably on steroids so it will be impossible.... this is probably the most dangerous defeatist(sp?) attitude you could have. You are beaten before you even start training.

Gear is the biggest factor we aren’t exactly benching in tight t-shirts and ace bandages here. All though I hear that people back in the day use to use wrap tennis balls behind their knees and use cocaine in the warm-up rooms....

Also its probably a lot easier for people to get stronger in a sport now that we have "sport specific" training guys aren’t powerlifters/bodybuilders or track and field or etc. Back in the day if you were good at one sport you were good at all of them right?

Nutrition we know so much more now about sodium/proteins etc.... we aren't eating raw eggs for breakfast out of the fridge cause that’s what rocky did....

I think my biggest argument for the whole thing is that since our involvement with WADA we actually had the balls to suspend entire countries. This would have never happened 15 20 years ago. These people do steroids for a whole different set of reasons, winning isn't a prize to them it’s their livelihood, the difference between having a roof over their entire family's head or standing in a breadline. I think the USAPL is doing something right b/c we are drug free and we can still stand toe to toe with these guys....I've seen a lot of local competitions and a lot of world competitions and in the difference between the 2 is 85% attitude. No one walks up on that stage with a defeatist attitude and wins period.

The system isn’t perfect but what system is if it was we wouldn’t need management.
