Without the success of the Arnold Classic, one of the largest, most successful celebrations of steroid use in the world, there would be no festival.

Also, I said I received a message. I didn't say it was an email. In any event the person seemed more (my impression) concerned with the lifts he saw in the USAPL meet at the festival rather than the link between the festival and the meet itself.

Christie,
While I find your attitude refreshing and enviable, I have to find fault with you reasoning for a couple of reasons;

1) Where you stated: "Never in my 15 years of powerlifting have I ever even considered the notion of using drugs. What is there to gain in this sport?

I would counter with the fact that there are feds dedicated to the idea of competing and using drugs and we know that lifters use drugs and try to compete in tested meets. Not everyone has your ideals and/or scruples.

2) I think there are 2 main reasons that this train of thought (if they're that strong they must be on drugs) takes root.
1. Is attitude
2. They don’t take into consideration the advances in gear, sports specific training, and nutrition.

Again, I agree that these are valid points. I'm just not sure that they are the only points out there.
When you see "drug free" lifters match or exceed lifts made by known drug users, it's hard to maintain the idea that everyone is clean.

3) we aren't eating raw eggs for breakfast out of the fridge cause that’s what rocky did....

"Rocky" got popped for importing GH in Austrailia last year .... LOL

I don't think USAPL is trying to change either group. I think they are trying to attract new lifters to USAPL by adding the raw lifters. Raw lifters are active in pockets all around the country but there really isn't much going on in a cohesive fashion. USAPL is trying to give them a reason to lift nationals that can represent lifters from more than a handful of states.

As for the Arnold, misgivings about the drug connection aside, it is a huge event and offers exposure for USAPL to people that might never have considered powerlifting to be something they are interested in.

"Do you feel the same way? Is the USAPL better now for the drug free lifter then when it was the ADFPA?"

I guess I'd have to say yes. ADFPA, when I first joined, still had polygraph testing. LOL. There also was no OMT at that time so improvements have been made in that regard.

On the other hand, we weren't aligned with the IPF , in fact, back then the IPF was "them."

I dunno.
