In Response To: Has the equipment gotten out of hand? (Garry Holmen)

Garry,

Without a doubt the equipment has gotten out of hand.

This morning while I was, um, in the bathroom I was reading a back issue of PLUSA. Circa 2001. Since it is only 4 years ago you'd think it would not be that big of a difference. You could not be more wrong.

A quick survey through the results saw the "500 bench" still a true landmark in single ply gear. 700 was awesome for double ply benchers. 1000# squats were not the norm. 800# was still a good squat for the heavies in single ply gear.

Ever since the advent of NXG+ material from Titan and the whatever the material the Rage is made with from Inzer, single ply gear has gotten out of hand. You have guys benching obscence weights they have no business handling. People like myself who are more interested in getting STRONG (*gasp oh the horror*) than getting 200# out of a bench shirt are screwed.

People who speak like I am are always criticized in a way insinuating we are afraid of big numbers and progression, etc. I am not afraid of big numbers. I am just afraid of the sport being a joke (probably too late for that IMO). I love 1000-1100# squats...when Coan, Karowski did them, even the double ply guys like Goggins and Mikesell were awesome because we all believed they we strong regardless of the suit.

Now, with the suits and the judging, evrything is crazy. We, as a sport, cannot close the box we opened. If the IPF limits gear, they will do it alone. The other feds will have their 1200,1300# squats and 1000# benches. If our egos can handle our reduced poundages lifted with the older gear, I am all for it.

I am not saying we have to go back to the Z-suit days, but we should go back to the Hardcore/NXG (no plus) Centurion days.
