Apples and oranges! There are natural restrictions like age (Grade School, Jr. High, High School, College, Pro's with a few barriers blurring there with some high school graduates going straight into professional sports. Wrong in my opinion.)

There are gender restrictions that are both fair and unfair. All shades of gray there. Girls have been very successful in joining and contributing to high school "boys" teams such as baseball, football, and even wrestling. But to tell an amateur athlete he can not compete where and when he/she wants is very arbitrary at best and would most likely be successfully challenged in the USA.
