Prime example.

Your friends on the national level must exchange buzzwords and cliches to use during times like this because you all use the same words. "Those who scream the loudest on the forums never give of their time to help change things," or some variation to that. Would we WANT to? Would that actually solve the problems I mentioned and that others have said? Or is this just shifting blame from those who are actually causing the problems to those who are just speaking up about them?

Those who are nastiest chase potential volunteers away...Are you sure you WANT volunteers? You are basically saying that the USAPL members who complain are the ones responsible for the attitude problems that exist. Are you kidding? The members who complain are not out to bash the organization, or they would not be spending their money on it, Regina. If anything, they are the ones that give a rip! Maybe, just maybe, there are more important things in their lives other than an organization, though... is that a real low thing, to put your family, school, career, church, etc. first before this?? If you beg to differ on what priorities should be, that is fine, but as a paid member who spends thousands of dollars a year on this sport (and who has friends and family invested in it), I do have a voice in USAPL. You are definitely not in any position to tell me otherwise.

As far as I know, most volunteers in this sport are motivated to do it out of love for the sport, not because they are trying to change some political and attitude problems. Volunteering will help meets to run for the lifters, but it will not make the attitudes of some go away. Volunteering your time is a gift you give to a group who is appreciative. Certainly not something you do for people who say that all you do is complain on forums about them (which proves my points mentioned earlier about not listening).

Some friendly USAPL members encouraged me to volunteer at a local meet a few months ago, and I did. I had such a fun time there, I wanted to do that again, and I was going to get my husband involved also. Not so long after that, the clique on the national level (people who sounded like you do, but a lot nastier) put me on the spot and pretty much sounded like they were demanding that I volunteer. I thought it was hilarious, since I already was a volunteer. Except for the local/grassroots lifters who are down-to-earth, you can bet I did feel motivated to get involved again.

You cannot manipulate USAPL members to do what you want them to do! A strange person would want to give of their time away from other responsibilites to help a group that talks to them that way and shifts responsibility onto them as if the problems are their fault. Lifters say there is a problem, and this response is, "give up what time you have to fix it yourself" - even when in reality it doesn't even get rid of the real/underlying problems.

BTW, you'll recall me trying to give Larry advice on how to recruit volunteers. As far as I'm concerned, even taking the time to make the suggestions I made to him was giving some of my time, and although he appreciated it, the women who scream the loudest for him did not. Hello?

The big problem really has not much to do with volunteering at all, and I think a lot of people know that.
