You state:
"I do not lift and compete to feel warm and fuzzy and liked by all participants. I first competed to beat previous totals and as improvement came, I added the goal of beating others my weight, and then my weight and age group. Our sport has a lot less subjectivity than others. A total tells you who won or lost. A friend of the promoter or federation V.P. needs to weigh less or have 1 lb. more total to beat you."

I am as completive as the next guy and maybe more. I just turned 60 and I still train so hard that many lifters half my age can hang with me. I hold State records in several drug free federations, have held National records and even currently hold a World record so I don't think I just go to meets to feel "warm and fuzzy" But you know what? None of those records mean a crap compared to the great friends I have made in the sport. I consider my many trophies as just dust catchers at this point but I consider my friends as priceless. I strongly believe that good sportsmanship as a higher measure of a person than any records that person may set. So yes I do think a friendly atmosphere is important at powerlifting meets. This is amateur sports and should be rewarding. If plastic trophies were the only reward I would have quit the sport long ago. But since I do get so much more out of the sport than just the results on the score-sheets, I will remain in the sport until the day I die. Have a great day!
